Don’t Be Tempted by Sweet Words

Proverbs 5:3–5

The lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave [or to Sheol, the nether world].       NIV

One of the commonest temptations confronting men and women today is the temptation to marital unfaithfulness, to adultery. The devil can make something that is evil look very attractive. A man may have quarreled with his wife, she may be not showing her best side and he goes out, maybe he’s in a bar or some place of entertainment or in an airplane and there is someone there whom the devil makes look so attractive. But remember, there is a difference between glitter and true beauty. And inside that glitter and underneath that surface is something that is deadly and poisonous.

The Bible is so honest – it warns us in advance: “Don’t be tempted by those words that are as sweet as honey, the speech that is smoother than oil,” because if you follow that way, the end of that way is humiliation, death. It is the break-up and the end of all the joy and happiness that God intended you to have.

That is such a practical warning today. If you are suffering that temptation right now, remember the end of that way is death. It ends in Sheol, in Hell.
